National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar announced on Thursday that three more suspects had been arrested for their role in the bloody attack on an Ahmadiyah community in Banten province that claimed three lives last Sunday.

“There are now five suspects in the case,” he said.

He identified them as Uj, Ke, Kn, Knh and Yh.

“Of the suspects, we have only detained Uj and Yh since we’re still collecting the evidence needed to detain the other three.”

Boy did not say what role they played in the attack by the mob of 1,500 against the community of 25 in Umbulan village, Pandeglang district.

On Wednesday, National Police Chief Gen. Timur Pradopo identified Uj as Ujang bin Sahari.

Speaking in a hearing with lawmakers, Timur said that two days before the attack in Umbulan, the chief of Cikeusik Police approached Ujang to ask him to control his followers.

The next day, the police approached Ismail Suparman, the local Ahmadiyah leader, and he agreed to evacuate along with his family.

The subsequent attack, Timur went on, occurred after Deden Sujana, another Ahmadiyah member, occupied Ismail’s house in a bid to defy the mob. “That’s why the mob got out of control and the fatalities occurred on the Ahmadiyah side,” the police chief said.

Deden was one of several Ahmadis critically injured.
