Marchers vow to defend blasphemy law
Published December 25, 2010

LAHORE/
RAWALPINDI - On the call of Tehrik Namoos-e-Risalat, tens of thousands of activists of various religious parties on Friday organised countrywide protest demonstrations against government’s bid to amend the controversial Blasphemy Law.

The organisations expressed their unanimous support for the law, as they observed Tahafuz-e-Namoos-e-Risalat Day across the country. They threatened to hold more countrywide protests and surround the parliament house if the government went ahead with changes to the controversial law. Mammoth rallies were organised in several cities, including Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Quetta and Karachi by the religious groups.

In Lahore, a protest rally, led by clerics from various religious organisations, was taken out from Masjid-e-Shuhada. Activists of Jama’at-e-Islami, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan and other religious parties turned up in large numbers to lodge their protest against government’s attempts to amend the Law.

Qari Zawar Bahadur, Maulana Amjad Khan, Dr Waseem Akhtar, Ameer-ul-Azeem, Abd-ur-Raof Farooqi, Maulana Aziz-ur-Rahman and others addressed on the occasion. The protesters called for jihad and vowed to make sacrifices to protect the honour of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). They chanted slogans against government and demanded dismissal of Punjab Governor Salmaam Taseer. They said they would not tolerate any to change the law.” They threatened to launch a national movement.

In Rawalpindi, a rally was taken out from Darul Aloom Taleem-ul-Quran to Fawara Chowk, Raja Bazaar.

Led by Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jama’at (ASWJ) Pakistan head Maulana Muhammad Ahmed Ludyanwi, other participants of the rally were JUI-F Secretary-General Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, Wifaq-ul-Mudaris Nazim Maulana Qazi Abdul Rasheed and JI Markazi Naib Ameer Dr Muhammad Kamal.

While addressing the participants, the speakers said all the ulema and the nation were united and would also render sacrifices to guard the dignity of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

They urged the UN to formulate a law to protect the dignity of all the prophets and award death sentences to those who harmed their nobility.

“PPP-led government should shelve the idea of amending the law as the masses will never allow it to do so in a country which came into being in the name of Islam,” they added.

They demanded of the government to dismiss Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer from his office immediately.

Tehreek-e-Namoos-e-Risalt in KarachiTehreek-e-Namoos-e-Risalt in KarachiThousands of supporters of religious groups rallied in Karachi on Friday against the proposed amendments to the blasphemy law, threatening the government with public’s wrath if it moved to amend the law.

The call for the protest was given by the Tehreek-e-Namoos-e-Risalt which was supported by a number of religious groups from different schools of thought. Protesters gathered outside hundreds of mosques in the city to defend the law.

Former information minister Sherry Rehman submitted a draft bill to the National Assembly in November, seeking an end to the death penalty under the existing law after a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, was given the death sentence for blaspheming the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

At this, religious groups joined hands to defend the law and in a meeting in Lahore on December 16 they announced a multi-phase, countrywide campaign to press the government to refrain from bringing any change in the law.

The protesters — belonging to Brelvi, Deobandi, Shia, Ahle Hadith and other sects — vowed to continue their protests till the government withdrew the bill from the lower house of parliament. They also demanded ouster of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer for lobbying to get a pardon for Asia Bibi from the president of the country.

The rally adopted several resolutions, asking the government to stick to the punishment awarded to Asia Bibi and sack the Punjab governor.

Strict security measures were seen en route of the rally. A massive gridlock was also witnessed on MA Jinnah Road.

The religious groups also announced they would observe a countrywide shutter-down strike on December 31. Besides, a public meeting will be held on January 9.

Asia Bibi, a Christian, was sentenced to death for blasphemy of Islam — judicial proceedings could take years.
Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) – Pakistan will review blasphemy laws to prevent them from targeting innocent people, a government official said.

The government will form a committee of scholars to revisit the law, said Shahbaz Bhatti, the federal minister for minority affairs.

It will submit its suggestions and procedures, which will be implemented to stop the law’s misuse, the minister said Thursday.

“After the formation of the committee we will …. find the way that whether through the legislation or some other procedural way we can stop the blasphemy law,” Bhatti said.

On pardoning of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy of Islam, Bhatti said the president will wait for the judicial proceedings.

Bibi’s lawyer has said that the proceedings might take years because the case is still in high court and may later go to the Supreme court.

Religious parties are planning protests after Friday prayers. The parties have been upset since the governor of Punjab province helped file a mercy petition with President Asif Ali Zardari’s office requesting a pardon for Bibi.

Parties including the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal ur Rehman (JUI-F) party will hold the rallies on Christmas Eve, said Moulana Amjad Khan, party spokesman.

A Pakistani court in November found the 45-year-old woman guilty of defiling the name of the Prophet Mohammed during a 2009 argument with Muslim fellow field workers.

The offense is punishable by death or life imprisonment, according to Pakistan’s penal code.

But an investigation by a Pakistani government ministry found the charges stemmed from “religious and personal enmity” and recommended Bibi’s release. Zardari has said he would pardon Bibi, but a court has ruled that the president can’t act until the sentence is confirmed by a higher court – a process her lawyer says could take two to three years.

About 2 million Christians live in Pakistan. The Islamic nation has a population of about 170 million, according to government statistics as religious parties plan Friday rallies to protest possible changes.

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) – Pakistan’s religious parties are planning protests this week against any attempts to change the nation’s blasphemy laws, a party spokesman said Thursday.

Moulana Amjad Khan, spokesman for the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal ur Rehman (JUI-F) party, said the JUI-F and other religious parties are going to hold the rallies on December 24.

JUI-F recently left the collation government led by President Asif Ali Zardari’s Pakistan People’s Party.

Religious parties have been upset since the governor of Punjab province, Salman Taseer, helped file a mercy petition with Zardari’s office, requesting a pardon for Asia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced for death for blasphemy.

In November, a Pakistani court found the 45-year-old Bibi guilty of defiling the name of the Prophet Mohammed during a 2009 argument with Muslim fellow field workers.

A Pakistani cleric is offering a nearly $6,000 bounty for anyone killing Bibi.

Moulana Yousaf Qureshi made his announcement in early December, condemning any effort by Zardari to pardon or release her.

“I will pay 500,000 rupees for the loyal follower of Muhammad who beheads Asia Bibi,” Qureshi told a crowd of several hundred people. The amount is equivalent to about $5,800, or more than six times the country’s average annual wage.

About 2 million Christians live in Pakistan, making up slightly over 1 percent of the officially Islamic nation’s population of about 170 million, according to government statistics.

MTKN APCISLAMABAD: An All Parties Conference (APC), held under the aegis of the Aalmi Majlis-e-Tahaffuz Khatam-e-Nabuwwat, held here on Wednesday gave a call for a countrywide shutterdown on December 31 against efforts to change the blasphemy law.

“The APC has categorically decided that any effort to repeal or weaken the blasphemy law will not be tolerated and Namoos-e-Risalat will be protected at all costs,” JUI-F Amir Maulana Fazlur Rehman said while addressing a press conference after chairing the APC.

Besides others, the APC was attended by ex-Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad, PML-Q chief Senator Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Allama Sajid Naqvi and Abul Khair Zubair.Qazi Hussain Ahmad and Chaudhry Shujaat strongly condemned the moves to try to make the blasphemy laws controversial. “All such attempts will be foiled with full force,” they said.

The speakers warned the government and its parliamentarians to refrain from making efforts to review or repeal the blasphemy law or encouraging those involved in blasphemous acts. “The government cannot dare to table any bill to amend the blasphemy law,” they said.

Asked as to how they would oppose any amendment in the blasphemy law in parliament, Fazlur Rehman emphatically said that nobody could dare speak on this issue on the floors of the two houses. He asked the government to clarify its position on the blasphemy law or get ready for humiliation.

Announcing the protest programme, he said countrywide demonstrations would be organised after Friday prayers on December 24 and shutterdown would be observed on December 31. A big public meeting would be addressed by central leadership of the APC on January 09.

The All Parties Conference also constituted a committee, headed by Sahibzada Abul Khair Zubair of Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan, to organise the movement all over the country. However, Fazlur Rehman said the future plan of action would be chalked out after consulting heads of all the religious parties. The committee would activate and organise moves from local to central levels.

Fazlur Rehman said in a country of 170 million people, every citizen enjoys freedom but the Western civilization had no place here. He called upon the traders’ community and shopkeepers to respond to the strike call with Islamic and national spirit. He declined to comment on the revival of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA).

INP adds: Maulana Fazlur Rehman said a big public meeting and protest demonstration would be held in Karachi on January 9, which will be attended by all the central leaders of the religious parties.

He said Dr Abul Khair Mohammad Zubair had been made chairman of Tehrik-e-Namoos-e-Risalat. The Tehrik will form sub-committees to organise the Tehrik at grassroot level. Fazl said they wanted to send a message to the world that the entire nation was united over the protection of “Namoos-e-Risalat”.

SIC warns against any change in blasphemy law
Published December 01, 2010

LAHORE — While rejecting the parliamentary committee constituted by the Prime Minister for proposing amendments in blasphemy laws, Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has warned the government of tough resistance if it undertakes any effort to amend the Islamic laws.

Sahibzada Fazal Karim, the SIC chief, expressed these views while addressing a Press conference at Lahore Press Club along with other leaders of the council on Tuesday.

He said no amendment could be made in the blasphemy laws according to the Article 227 of 1973 Constitution.

He informed that the SIC had formed a delegation to hold meetings with the members of Senate and national and provincial assemblies to convince them to deter government’s move to amend the blasphemy laws.

Sahibzada said the SIC delegation would also write letters to all members of the parliament in this regard.

He announced the SIC would observe a condemnation day on Friday across the country in which ulema and prayer leaders would slam the government’s repressive policies against the participants of the ‘Save Pakistan Long March’ and also adopt resolutions against government for suppressing the lovers of Holy Prophet.

Condemning the Indian atrocities in Held Kashmir, he said the leaders of SIC demanded that India not be given permanent membership of Security Council, as the New Delhi was responsible for the killing of more than 80,000 Kashmiris.

Castigating the policies of PPP-led coalition government, he claimed that the government had failed to deliver.

He further said the rulers were pursuing their personal interests only, leaving the country at the mercy of US drone attacks and terrorism.

Sahibzada said the SIC appreciated the Lahore High Court decision barring the government from pardoning the blasphemy convict, Aasia Masih, or extraditing her to the US.

He demanded that written-off loans be recovered, while the elite classes should bring their money to the country.

The SIC chief called upon the federal and provincial governments to take steps to maintain peace and harmony during the month of Muharram.

Sherry RehmanJamiat-e-Ulema-e-Pakistan has announced to stage protest demonstrations across the country on December 3 against the bid to repeal blasphemy law and in this connection a forum - Tahfuz-e-Namoos-e-Risalt - headed by Sahibzada Abul Khair has been formed to monitor the situation with special reference to protecting the blasphemy law.

The announcement was made at an all parties conference (APC) held on Tuesday under the auspices of Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Pakistan with Sahibzada Abul Khair in the chair. Others who attended the meeting included Syed Munawar Hasan, Ameer Jamat-e-Islami; Abdul Ghafoor Hyderi, General Secretary JUI(F); Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman, President Tanzeem-ul-Madaris Ahle Sunnat; Pir Mian Abdul Khaliq of Bhar Chowndi and PML leaders.

The APC demanded of the government to avoid repealing blasphemy law and the punishment given under section 295-C should not be amended.

The meeting also demanded that PPP should explain its position on the private bills that were formulated by Ms Rehman and condemned Asma Jehangir and other NGOs for their campaign to amend the Islamic law “on the behest of the West”.

It also demanded for suspending all the powers of the President with regard to pardoning the punishment given under blasphemy law and condemned Governor Punjab Salman Taseer for extending “unnecessary” support to Asiya Bibi, saying, if she had any reservations she should appeal in court.

Babar Awan says no one can change blasphemy law

Friday, November 26, 2010
By Ansar Abbasi

Babar AwanISLAMABAD: Law Minister Babar Awan has categorically said that no one should think of repealing the blasphemy law. “In my presence as the Law Minister, no one should think of finishing this law,” he said while declaring himself to be a “Shaheen” (eagle). He was talking to a senior member of the Jang Group on Thursday.

The minister came out with these unequivocal remarks in the wake of the latest media debate over the blasphemy laws, which started once again by the recent award of a death sentence to a Christian woman on blasphemy charges.

The categorical stance by Minister Awan, arguably one of the closest aides of President Zardari and one with a role in many controversies, is in direct contradiction to that taken by Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer, who while being critical of the same law is all out to secure the release of Aasia Masih, sentenced to death by a district and sessions court of Nankana Sahib in the Punjab. Taseer has already declared that the convict was innocent and according to observers his view is shared by many commentators who in a majority of cases may not even have gone through the details of the evidence and judgment.

While appreciating the comment that any effort to amend or repeal the blasphemy law would lead to chaos, the Babar Awan emphasised that in his presence as law minister no one would be allowed to change or repeal the law.

“In order to remove ambiguity pl (please) also write 2moro (tomorrow) that I told U (The Jang Group) (that) in my presence as Law Minister no one should think of finishing this law,” this is what the law minister precisely said in his written statement. On this, the law minister was asked if he should be quoted, he said, “Sure.” Babar Awan added that he was servant of servants of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

He said, “I’m khadim of khadmaan-e-Rasool.” He prayed that candle of ishq-e-Rasool (love for Prophet (PBUH)) is lit in every heart. The law minister, instead, said that all religious nobles must be respected in order to save world from crisis like the publication of caricature.

It is not clear if the law minister has the blessings of President Asif Ali Zardari, who is under pressure to pardon the convict Aasia Masih but it shows serious cracks within the ruling elite about its policy on the blasphemy law.

Babar Awan claims to be a religious scholar; he gives lectures on Islam but at the time faces serious accusation of corruption in the Harris Steel Mill case of Bank of Punjab scandal. Additionally, he continues to claim to be a PhD and uses the prefix of Dr with his name despite the fact that the Monticello University, which awarded him the fake degree, has already been declared unauthorized both by the American and Pakistani authorities to have been entitled to issue such a degree at any stage.

Babar Awan is also generally believed as the man responsible for the government’s confrontational mode with the judiciary. All controversies notwithstanding, on the issue of blasphemy laws he has opted to detach himself from all those who are demanding the repeal of these laws.
