The Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) in Bogor claims that 28 Ahmadiyah followers will renounce their faith and convert to Islam.

“God willing, on Tuesday the 28 Ahmadis will recite Syahadat [to convert to Islam] at Al Hasan Mosque in Cibungbulang,” he said in a statement issued on Monday night.

Joni Jaelani, the head of Ciareuteun Udik village, said eight Ahmadis from the village, which is in Cibungbulang district, on Saturday declared their willingness to renounce their faith.

“It started when Jimmi [an Ahmadiyah follower] and his family came to me, telling me they wanted to renounce their faith,” he said, adding that the other Ahmadis had then followed suit.

“The original plan was for them to fully convert on Sunday, but we were informed that there were 20 more people from Jakarta wanting to join them. So we have delayed it until Tuesday,” Joni said.

Previously, two Ahmadiyah communities on Sunday reported that West Java police and military officers had coerced Ahmadiyah followers to renounce their faith through bribery and intimidation.

Firdaus Mubarik, a spokesman for the Indonesia Ahmadiyah Congregation (JAI), said he had received reports from Ahmadis across West Java that police and military officers had been visiting their homes, asking them to sign sworn statements renouncing their faith.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday a group 40 demonstrators broke into an Ahmadiyah mosque in Cipeuyeum, West Java, and burned the group’s religious books.

“Police were there. The mob did not destroy the mosque or clash with the Ahmadis,” said Asep Isamudin, head of the JAI in Cianjur district.

“They burned the books and the Korans because they believe Ahmadiyah is in violation of the joint ministerial decree and the recently issued gubernatorial decree banning the activities of the sect in West Java,” he said.
